Did you know that our emotions only last for 90 seconds? According to Harvard brain scientist Dr. Jill Taylor, our feelings start to dissipate after only a minute and a half. If we continue to experience that emotion, it’s because we’re choosing to hold on to the story we’re telling ourselves about the situation we experienced.
Why are so many of us challenged with such strong emotions that interfere with our daily lives? These feelings hold us back from truly living!
WHAT IF WE TOOK THE TIME TO…?
- Notice the emotion.
- Call it out.
- Process it.
- And then let it go.
When we hold on to a feeling (either positive or negative), we are soothing some place within us that desperately needs to feel that emotion, and we’re trying to exercise control over our life circumstances.
WAITING TO HEAR BACK
For instance, let’s say that you’re waiting to hear back on a job interview. In the midst of the waiting, you may feel anxiety or worry, which goes beyond 90 seconds.
“I wonder if I answered that last question correctly…”
“They probably found a better candidate…”
“I don’t even know why I applied…”
By focusing on the negative possibilities, you are choosing to tell yourself a story that reinforces your anxiety and worry. In reality, you’ve made up a story, and now you’re continuing to hold onto it.
- Instead, what if you noticed the feelings of anxiety and worry?
- What if you said to yourself…? “Oh interesting…I’m feeling anxious and worried right now.”
- What if you become aware of the sensations that you’re feeling in your body? At this point, you’re experiencing e-motion…literally “energy in motion.”
- What if you allow that sensation to pass and let it go? The result would be a heightened degree of clarity to deal with the situation at hand.
If we don’t allow the energy to be released, it actually becomes trapped in our bodies. Trapped energy, also referred to as “Qi stagnation” in Traditional Chinese Medicine, is usually the underlying cause of all our health challenges.
